Abu Dhabi awards $653 mil. contract to build Louvre Abu Dhabi museum on Saadiyat island.

Organised jointly by Agence France-Muséums, TDIC and the Ecole du Louvre, a cycle of art history lectures entitled ‘Louvre Abu Dhabi: Talking Arts series’ was inaugurated in Abu Dhabi in September. The first lecture in the cycle was given on 28 September last in Manarat Al Saadiyat. This lecture cycle will be devoted to exploring the principal acquisitions made for the future Louvre Abu Dhabi museum, understanding their place in the history of art and civilisations and acquiring key landmarks in the history of painting, sculpture and the decorative arts.

1-Day debate in the auditorium of the Louvre museum in Paris on 15 October 2011, entitled ‘About the Louvre Abu Dhabi: the challenges of the universal museum from the 18th to the 21st century’. A day of reflection and discussion on the concept of the universal museum, putting into perspective the cultural issues of the future Louvre Abu Dhabi museum.

An MA course in Museum Studies started in the first term in 2010 at the Université de Paris Sorbonne Abu Dhabi, with the degree co-awarded by the Ecole du Louvre and Paris IV Sorbonne; the Louvre museum and Agence France-Muséums were closely involved in its design.

En août 2010, une étape majeure a été franchie dans la construction du musée. La pose des pieux du Louvre Abou Dabi incarne l'avancement significatif des travaux.

Le président de la République Nicolas Sarkozy et le prince héritier d'Abou Dabi, Cheikh Mohammad Ben Zayed AI-Nahyan ont donné mardi 26 mai 2009 le coup d'envoi de la construction du Louvre Abou Dabi, premier musée universel au Moyen-Orient, lors d'une cérémonie à l'Emirates Palace, à Abou Dabi. Les deux dirigeants ont inauguré à cette occasion l'exposition intitulée "Talking Art: Louvre Abu Dhabi", où sont présentées les premières acquisitions de la collection du musée du Louvre Abou Dabi, accompagnées d'un choix d'œuvres venant des musées français; le musée du Louvre, le musée d'Orsay, le Centre Pompidou, le musée Guimet, le musée du Quai Branly ainsi que la Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
